South West, Western Australia

South West, Western Australia:

Michael and I have shared so many special moments down in the South West. Our first date was here, our first trip was here & we got engaged here.

We have travelled to so many amazing places around the world, but down south will always be one of our favourites. It has some of the most crystal clear, beautiful blue water I have ever seen, countless incredible wineries and numerous amazing places to dine.

When looking where to stay down here I would look at:

https://www.privateproperties.com.au/destination-guides/

https://www.exclusiveescapes.com.au

(Our family friends own the most incredible house listed as ‘Grass Roots’: we highly recommend staying here, it has incredible bush land views and an infinity pool!!)

https://www.stayz.com.au

(We love to stay at the house listed as ‘ALLURE’: It is in an amazing location, close to town, on the water and is super modern!! https://www.stayz.com.au/holiday-rental/p9169848 )

https://www.airbnb.com.au

(I use Air BnB for everywhere around the world, but when travelling down south I would use the other 3 search options first)

If travelling here from interstate or internationally you would fly to Perth & hire a car for the road trip. Our favourite area to Stay and be based is Dunsborough/Yallingup. Anywhere near this part of town will be perfect.

Best Places to Dine:

Blue Manna: This restaurant is a stand out in WA. The food is incredible & the seafood is amazing. Some of our favourite things to order are - prawn stuffed chicken wings, crab tacos, tuna trio plate, sashimi, oysters, the duck, the crab & the whole fish. Also love the cocktails here!

Little Fish: The food here is so delicious, large portion sizes and top quality. Our favourite things to order are the scallops with prawns, squid or fish or the ribs & steak!! Be sure to get dessert at the end. Every single dessert is amazing.

Yarri: This place is fine dining & incredible. It has a set menu & all the food is seasonal and honours the region! We loved our experience here. The wine is divine too.

Rustico (At hay shed hill): The menu is a beautiful 6 course tapas degustation. The food is so good!

Fishbone: Japanese cuisine which is fresh, tasty and top shelf.  The number one thing you must order is the Double Salmon sushi roll, it's sooo good! We also really enjoy the miso soup, edamame beans, gyoza, Karaage chicken, sashimi plate & panko crumbed prawns! Good quality ingredients paired with good service makes this a must do lunch spot. Don't forget the Margaret River chocolate factory is just across the road for a treat after ;)

Cool Cafés to dine:

The Berry Farm: A really cute property, lots of animals & delicious Jam & Cream scones. They are a must to try, so yummy! Also really nice jams to buy!

Meelup farmhouse: Really nice ambience and lots of animals on the property to visit. The Pornstar Martini is one of my all time favourite cocktails ever! You can also do picnic hampers here, or a bottomless brunch which is super fun! We recommend trying the orange and poppy seed pancakes if you visit in the morning or the baked brie & Chargrilled Fremantle octopus if you visit in the afternoon!

Wild & Woods: We had our first date here many years ago and it does a nice fresh breakfast with a decent coffee to boot. Also try their immune booster juice - Amaze!

Mealup: Good little café for bacon and eggs. Simple yet nice!

Riversmith: Margs main street, Modern spot with a great view of town for breakfast and lunch.

Colourpatch: Located at the southern end of the capes, in Augusta, this is a brand new cafe that does an awesome iced latte and has a boat as the bar!

Wineries:

Wise Winery: We love going to this winery for tastings! The wine here is great & the venue is beautiful! We always leave with a couple cartons of our favourites!

Credaro: Such a nice spot & divine wines

Winddance: This is probably our current favourite winery! We love the reds from here, the Pet Nat and the rosè! We also always leave with a jar of honey!

Swings and Roundabouts: Amazing outdoor setting with swing tables (Instagram it)! Great for the family, with a great playground for kids.

Snake & Herring: Beautiful wines

Amelia Park: Nice for dining and its wines are fabulous

Vasse Felix: Great wines!

Clairault: Great wines too!

    Pubs/Breweries:

Eagle bay Brewery: A cool vibe and great spot to come for a tasting paddle of beers enjoyed with fresh pizzas and olives!

Black Brewing Co: An epic spot and great for beers.

Wild hop brewery: Indoor/Outdoor setting with great beers and awesome food, a must go on a sunny summer's afternoon.

Caves house: On the road as you enter Yallingup, this place has all the feels! An icon of the Down South surfing scene, a local hangout, and a great place to stop for a drink after a long day down at the beach.

Colonial Brewery: Near Margaret River, Arguably the best beers in the region. Also has a great space for big groups and playground for kids.

Margaret River Brewhouse: In Margaret River, this place has amazing, tasty food and a great beer selection! Try the sticky pork, charred lamb shoulder or squid salad.

    Bakeries:

Tas’s Bakery: Right in the heart of Dunsborough, this bakery is the best! My fav things to order are the chicken and salad rolls, the spinach and ricotta sausage roll (best I’ve ever had), or a pie!

Gugelhupf bakery: This quaint little wooden church building on the road to yalls packs some serious treats! Try the gugelhupf pastry, vanilla custard filled bliss!

Sidekick: Margs town, hip indie style cafe who do a great coffee.

White Elephant: On the water in Gnarabup, overlooking the bay, this is a perfect coffee spot for a summer morning.

    Must Do’s:

We love to take a boat or jet ski on our trips! It adds to the fun and geographe bay has epic conditions for skurfing or foiling behind the boat! Also really fun to go squidding (Catching fresh squid) or simply take the boat or jet ski out for a cruise around the bays Dunsborough boat ramp to Bunker bay (OUR FAVE). Sunset cruising is recommended too.

Go to our favourite beach (Eagle Bay) and enjoy the day. The water here is magical, its colour on a sunny day is incredible. Beach cricket is fun or relaxing in the sun & going for dips is amazing here. Taking the jet ski to this spot also makes for a fun day. (You can choose to do this at any of the beaches along here, they are very similar - Meelup, Castle Rock, Bunker bay etc.)

Surfing: Some of the best Surf in the world is in this region. Even if you don't surf, watching the waves and surfers along the coast can be very entertaining. Swell between 1m-2m consider surfing  at 3 bears, Shallows, Mitchells, Honeycombs, Gallows, Lefties, Gas bay, Contos, or Boranup. 2-3m consider Yallingup main break, bubble, rabbits, Smiths beach Main reef, walls, super tubes, Injidup Car park (protected in Southerly wind) and Injidup point. 4m and above, Gracetown (North point, south point and huzzas), Margaret river main break or some novelty waves inside the cape at bunker bay and rocky point.

Go on Walks in cool spots: Geographe bay road takes you to a foot path where you can go on a beautiful walk along the ocean (You can also hire a bike and do this, or in our case a tandem bike haha). Walk any part of the Cape to Cape- Our favourite part to do is from Cape Naturaliste lighthouse to Sugarloaf rock. Drive to Eagle Bay community hall park & walk out to Rocky Point. Such an awesome walk, great views and a cool spot. Very special to us as that is where Michael proposed!!

Drive along Cape Naturaliste road and stop at every bay & beach to check it out. Our favourite is Eagle Bay

Take a SUP or a ski out for a paddle at Eagle bay
